This Off-Broadway playhouse on Chrisopher Street has been in continuous operation because 1955. Originally recognized as the Theatre De Lys, it was renamed right after Lucille Lortel, an American actress and producer who ran the theater that was a present from her husband, Louis Schweitzer, starting in 1955. It has been in continuous operation considering that then, but it really is history as a playhouse dates back to the 1930′s when it was converted from a movie theater. The developing itself dates to 1868.
